From Barstool to Big Screen

The improbable journey of the documentary, Song Sung Blue, from the Heartland to Hollywood, was nearly derailed at the final hour. After years of self-financing and filming the soulful love story of the Neil Diamond tribute duo Lightning & Thunder, Kohs had finally finished the documentary. However, just days before the world premiere at Slamdance, he was hit with a cease and desist letter, threatening millions in fines. Desperate, he made a "rock & roll Hail Mary" phone call to a number he had never dared to dial. He left a tearful voicemail for Eddie Vedder, pleading for help to get his film in front of Neil Diamond. In an unbelievable twist of fate, Eddie called back at 1 a.m. to say he'd try to reach Neil.

Then, hours before the documentary’s premiere, Kohs' phone rang: it was Neil Diamond himself, who said he "loved-loved-loved" the movie and was honored to be a part of it. This incredible connection saved the documentary, setting it on a path that, 25 years after Kohs set out on the journey, would eventually lead to the Hollywood feature version of Song Sung Blue starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson.
